PRAGUE MONUMENTS
| Prague Castle |
|
A castle was established on this site in the 9th century, and a Romanesque palace was erected in the 12th. In the 14th century, under the reign of Charles IV, it was rebuilt in the Gothic style. The final reconstruction of the Royal palace took place under the Jagellons at the end of the 15th century, and at that time the builder Benedikt Rejt added the now-famous Vladislav Hall, also in Gothic style. The castle was enlarged in the 16th century, especially after a big fire in 1541. The Spanish Hall, in a new part of the castle, was added in the reign of Rudolf II, and it took its final form in the time of Empress Maria Theresa, under the direction of the architect M. Pacassi. After World War I the interior and gardens of the castle were renovated by the architect J. Plecnik.
Today the Castle is the seat of the President of the Czech Republic, and it serves as the historical and political centre of both city and state.

| St. Vitus, St. Wenceslas and St. Adalbert Cathedral (Katedrala svateho Vita, Vaclava a Vojtecha) |
|
This Gothic cathedral, the spiritual symbol of the Czech state, founded in the year by Jan Lucembursky (John of Luxembourg) and his sons Karel and Jan Jindrich. It took nearly six centuries to build. Begun in 1344 by Mathias Arras and Petr Parler upon the site of a 10th-century rotunda, the final phase of construction ended only in the period 1873-1929.. The cathedral contains undergrounds tombs of Czech kings. Parler also built St. Wenceslas Chapel, which is decorated with frescoes and semi-precious stones. The coronation jewels are deposited here, too. |
| Charles Bridge |
|
The bridge, a pedestrian link between two other tourists sites, Prague castle and Old Town, is a major tourist attraction itself. Evenly spaced along the bridge are 30 sculptural tableaux, most of them dark with age with various religious motifs. The bridge is so popular, artists and craftsmen arrayed along its length vie for tourist dollars. Thieves and pickpockets likewise ply their trade here, so beware.
But the main attraction of the bridge are the excellent views of the city, the Castle, and the riverscape. You can also get great views if you climb up the Old Town Bridge Tower (in photo on right). |
| Loretto (Loreta) |
|
This former place of pilgrimage with the copy of Santa Casa was built in 1626-31, and the Baroque Church of the Nativity of Our Lord was added in 1734-35. The facade of the front wing was rebuilt by K. I. Dienzenhofer in 1720-22. The tower contains 27 loretto bells which play a Marian song We Greet You a Thousand Times (every hour from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.).The most valuable item of the liturgical treasury is the so-called Prague Sun, a monstrance weighing over 12 kg and embellished with 6,222 diamonds.
Open daily, except Mondays from 9 a.m. to 12.15 p.m., and from 1 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. |
| Old Town Bridge Tower (Staromestska mostecka vez) |
|
The entrance gate from the Old Town to the Charles Bridge, designed by Petr Parler. One of the most beautiful Gothic towers in Europe. The tower contains copies of the enthroned figures of Charles IV and Wenceslas IV. Over the archway is a row of carved emblems of territoriesbelonging to Charles's Empire.
Open daily: March 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. April - May, October 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. June - September 10 a.m. - 10 p.m. November - February 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Permanent exhibition: Astrological and astronomical relations of the origins of the Charles bridge.

| Old Town Bridge Tower (Staromestska mostecka vez) |
|
The most significant square of historical Prague. It originated in the 12th century and since then witnessed many events. Beside the Old Town Hall and the Church of Our Lady before Tyn the square has several other dominants, the baroque St. Nicholas church (K. I. Dienzenhofer, 1732 - 1735), the rococo Kinsky palace housing the National Gallery graphic collection, the Stone Bell house - a gothic city palace from the 14th century - now the Municipal Gallery concert and exhibition rooms, and the Memorial to Master Jan Hus sculptured by Ladislav Saloun (1915). The very place where the 27 Czech gentlemen were executed on 21 June, 1621, is marked in the square pavement. The Prague merdidian can be seen not far from there. |
| The Old Town Hall with the Astronomical Clock - Horologe (Staromestska radnice s orlojem) |
|
The Town Hall was founded in 1338. In 1364 the tower was joined to the chapel, and in 1470 the Town Hall was refurbished in Gothic style. The clock dates from the beginning of the 15th century; on the hour, a procession of the Twelve Apostles appears the window in the upper part. In the lower part are 12 medallions with the signs of the zodiac, created by Josef Manes (1865). The eastern wing of the Town Hall was destroyed on May 8, 1945, and has not been rebuilt yet.
Open daily April - October Mon 11 a.m. - 6 p.m., Tue - Sun 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. November - March Mon 11 a.m. - 5 p.m., Tue - Sun 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

| Rudolfinum |
|
A Neo Renaissance building constructed in 1876 - 1884 (J. Zitek, J. Schulz), originally designed for a picture gallery, collection of antiquites and concerts. In the years 1918 - 1938 and 1945 - 1946 it housed the National Assembly. The Czech Philhramonic Orchestra found its seat there in 1946. The main hall - the Dvorak Hall - is world famous as a place where the Prague Spring music festival concerts take place every year. |
